Annie Smith is kidnapped by Carlos Lopez during a robbery in Oklahoma City. He intends to hold her as a hostage until he reaches Dallas to meet his cousin, a Mexican drug lord who poses as a legitimate business man. Annie realizes that prayer and her wits are going to get her through this safely. She manages to reach her cell phone and dial 911 and leave the line open. She convinces Lopez that her father will pay a large ransom to release her. He stops at a payphone so Annie can use the phone. Annie is rescued by Ross Dupree, a handsome Native American, who used to be a cop but is now a state legislator. Ross keeps a police scanner in his old truck.
Ross and Annie fall for each other. They begin an intense romance, but they both bring baggage to the relationship. Annie is a single mother with a young daughter, and her ex husband has stopped paying child support thanks to his attorney girlfriend who is jealous of Annie. Annie can't get buy on her teaching salary.
Ross carries a secret that creates a barrier that Annie can't break through. Ross finally breaks off with Annie, leaving her with a broken heart. She vows to start a new life.
When Annie's sister Jen, a web designer, has a client who wants to sell his dating service, Annie teams with her sister and friend Cate McCrackin, a school psychologist, to turn the dating servie into Oklahoma Hearts Online.com, a sucessful Online dating service that becomes the talk of Oklahoma City.
Jen's former fiance Eric comes back into her life to Annie's dismay. He gets involved with the business helping Jen. When Annie volunteers to sign up for a date as a promotion for the business, Jen and Eric rig the outcome so that the Governor of Oklahoma wins a date with Annie. Annie goes out with Govenor Ben Stone a few times, but she misses Ross.
Ross also misses Annie and is jealous of her dates with the Governor. Ross comes back into Annie's life, and they are able to beak through his barrier and guilt. Carlos Lopez is realeased from jail on a clerical error. Annie finds her car vandalized, her dog is poisoned, the company website is hacked and a Hearts Online customer receives a threatening call. Annie and Cate have turned down Eric's attempts to buy them out.
As the threats becom more violent, Jen is influenced by Eric to walk out on the business and to turn her back on her family and friends. Cate is attacked in her garage one evening and is almost beaten to death. Jen finally comes back to her senses, leaves Eric, and comes back into the good graces of her family and friends.
Annie and her sister are put into protctive custody by the Oklahoma City police. When the officer guarding, the sisters disappears, Jen and Annie run for their lives, and Ross has to find the ones who want them dead.
